The Anthropocene: “The Human Epoch” is a documentary that displays some of the effects that humans have had on the planet’s geology over the course of recent history. In other words, it is a visual representation of multiple examples that support Crutzen’s article related to the Anthropocene and its origins and effects. For the following class discussion, each student shared an additional example related to the world surrounding us and the impact that human activity has on the planet from a geological perspective. The “GMO’s as a Poison” example was inspired by the documentary “The Human Epoch,” by the health care scientific field of studies, and by the emerging dietary illness and gastric syndromes observed in the community. Also, GMOs are generating negative effects on our environment such as the destruction of productive soils and a tremendous breakdown of the farming system.

Fiction and Science Journalism: The discussion board post engages with the Anthropocene from the perspective of a student from the health care field of studies and biochemistry discipline within the sciences. The Margaret Atwood article has been analyzed from the perspective of the health care system. Also, the article’s evaluation included connections between the author’s perspective and current climate predictions. Once, the article was related to the field of health care within our community, advantages and shortcomings were highlighted from the author’s writing style. Additional articles, media documents, or websites were incorporated into the debate. The new information allowed to bring the discussion to a new level of knowledge. The discussion was also related to relevant materials that we have already discussed in class, particularly those that define and characterize the Anthropocene and its connection to climate change.

Climate and Geology: In the discussion, the following questions were addressed: How is the intended audience for the report by Guo, Desmet, and Powdie different from the intended audience for, say, a New York Times science article? Are there any similarities or overlaps between these audiences? Are you a member of this intended audience? The answer focused in terms of narrative information versus data and the purpose that the balance between the two might serve.

Science and Public Policy: The following thread includes a piece of science journalism related to the COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic. The chosen source of information was relevant to the pandemic scenario from the health care and social disciplinary perspectives within the sciences. The selected article is related to the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on the rise of overdose deaths.

After the Human Epoch: In this section, the main source of information included a piece of science journalism and a short science fiction film, both of which addressed questions surrounding the advent of AI. The discussion focused on a reflection regarding the relationship between human beings and AI. The debate covered how the source of info work in terms of data and narrative as they engage with certain intended audiences. The main goal was to identify and expand the claim that each article and film made about the relationship with AI. Also, the rise of AI was related to the core topic of the class “the Anthropocene.”
